In the historic Doll Tests, Black children often described Black dolls as “bad” or “ugly” and showed a preference for white dolls.

Since 2007, The Black Dolls of The Black Doll Affair have been working to change that story by helping Black girls see the beauty, brilliance, and value in themselves.

Through Black Doll Affair community programs around the world, we have shared positive messages about Black dolls, Black images, and Black identity. For more than a decade, we also worked with Mattel to help change how Barbie is presented to our children, from encouraging conversations about racism to advocating for dolls proudly wearing afros.

After donating more than one million #blackdolls and becoming the largest consumer group of #BlackBarbie, we are proud to be leading the conversation around Black dolls and to be beacons for our children, who now celebrate dolls that reflect the hue they are.

Two decades since we began our Pretty… Philanthropic™ journey to change the narrative around Black dolls, our children are proudly choosing dolls that look like them. In fact, the question we hear most often is:
