TURNING A “LOSS” INTO EMPOWERMENT: THE FOUNDER OF THE BLACK DOLL AFFAIR LAUNCHES THE MOVEMENT’S MOST PHILANTHROPIC PROGRAMMING TO DATE.

Building upon The Black Doll Affair's (TBDA) dedication to championing the underdoll (underdog) and caring for those in need, affectionately known as Mama Doll and the founder of TBDA—proudly introduced 'Breakfast at Christie's' (BAC) philanthropic initiative on the 2024 Martin Luther King Service Day.

Nominated for the City of Tacoma's 2024 Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Award, Mama Doll received recognition from the Mayor's committee for her impactful community contributions. While not chosen as a recipient of the award, Mama Doll graciously declined the invitation to attend the event, preferring not to view community service as a competition. Instead, she expressed her sincere gratitude for the nomination and extended appreciation to the Mayor and the committee. Motivated by her dedication to empowering people, improving systems and nurturing self-esteem, Dana then embarked on creating 'Breakfast at Christie's.

Set to be showcased in a Vogue magazine ad, this groundbreaking initiative seamlessly trends fashion and philanthropy, driven by the belief that everyone emerges a winner through community service. Our philanthropic programming will span nationwide Black Doll Affairs events, where we honor dedicated individuals, uplift youth as the leaders of tomorrow, and recognize outstanding community contributions. Each Black Doll Affair will be accompanied by detailed advance information. Stay tuned to our event page for updates.

Drawing inspiration from the iconic movie 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' and Mattel's pioneering black doll, Christie, released in 1968 amidst the civil rights movement, this initiative echoes the spirit of inclusivity and kindness transcending racial boundaries. Aligning seamlessly with The Black Doll Affair's ethos of inclusiveness, the Black Doll Affairs  BAC initiative is dedicated to honoring and celebrating individuals and groups of all races who make positive contributions to their communities. Intended to be featured in a Vogue magazine ad, this groundbreaking initiative champions the idea that everyone's a winner, fostering nationwide Black Doll Affairs events. Each BAC event will be meticulously detailed in advance. Stay tuned to our event page for updates here.

Featured in Vogue five times, The Black Dolls have consistently intertwined fashion with self-esteem and altruism. Upholding this legacy, BAC is poised to make a charitable and stylish statement.

Embodying The Black Doll Affair's 'Pretty...philanthropic' ethos, I and The Black Dolls have been graciously acknowledged. 'Breakfast at Christie's' stays true to BDA's core mission: celebrating the overlooked doll. This initiative challenges competitive philanthropy, recognizing that community wins when kindness isn't a contest. While humbled by recognition, losing underscored a flawed system. Reflecting, I realized awards in philanthropy shouldn't be popularity contests. 'Breakfast at Christie's' shifts this paradigm, not my loss but a victory for the community. Grateful for the nomination, it's an opportunity to continue inspiring change. At BAC, every Christie nomination is a win for all involved," said Hill.

And the Christie goes to…!

ABOUT THE BLACK DOLLS: AWARDS & ACHIEVEMENTS:

In 2007, Hill witnessed a Doll Test revealing Black children's negative perceptions of black dolls as 'bad,' 'ugly,' and 'least preferred.' In response, she founded The Black Doll Affair. Rooted in philanthropy and featured in college textbooks, Hill's self-esteem movement has garnered prestigious accolades and affiliations. Notably, it received the esteemed Barack Obama Presidential Service Award and Congressional floor recognition championed by the late Congressman John Lewis. Former Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue, Georgia Senator Nan Orrock (Honorary Black Doll), Georgia State House Representative Margaret Kaiser (Honorary Black Doll), along with Stacey Abrams and Kwanza Hall (Honorary Black Doll Brotha), joined the Atlanta City Council in proclaiming December 12th as The Black Doll Affair Day in Georgia. Naomi King, Dr. King's esteemed sister-in-law, and the women from the historic Brown v. Board of Education (Leola, Linda, and Cheryl Brown) have become cherished Honorary sisters to The Black Dolls. Hill was also nominated for the Living Legacy Award by the Carter G. Woodson Foundation, inspired by Woodson's commitment to showcasing Black Americans' contributions. Additionally, Mama Doll and The Black Dolls received a 'Community Service Appreciation' plaque from The City of Atlanta in recognition of their dedicated service at the M.L. King Recreation & Aquatics Center. For more information, visit The Black Doll Affair online at blackdollaffair.com.
